Well, I thought I was going to write a post about some of the small things that are different from life in the USA. Just little oddities that pop up.
But the tagline of the blog, Journey through Simplicity and Self Care to Joy, has been rolling around in my brain, nagging at me.
That is because the Self Care part hasn’t gotten enough attention. And Decluttering is only one small part of what simplicity is to me.
Moving to Portugal has been an adventure and incredibly rewarding. Still, I hope that this blog can provide more than my story to readers, that there will be nuggets of information or recognition that are useful.
This post could go in so many different directions. Here is my first stab at a multi-part article.
- Why is self-care important to anyone? Why is it important to me, Serafina? How much should I reveal?
- How does decluttering relate to self-care?
- Why move out of the country? Why Portugal?
- I’m not moving, is this meaningful to me? I hope I can make it meaningful.
I mentioned anxiety in one of my previous posts about why I was decluttering.
A more immediate purpose is that I think it will make me more comfortable in the house. The visual clutter contributes to my anxiety. It is like a low-level buzzing sound in my brain, a scratchy tag on a shirt, an underlying annoyance that I’m often not fully aware of.

I believe that decluttering, to whatever extent you desire, is useful for anyone.
Self-care might feel like a buzzword but it is important. Maybe for some, it comes naturally. It doesn’t to me. I can be all put together on the outside and be a mess at home and internally.
Let me know which of the above questions are important to you, and if there are any others questions you’d be interested in. Thank you!
