Why do you do it, Baby?

A song is playing in the cafe I’m in with that refrain. A low, bluesy tune that I don’t recognize; yet the refrain is apt for this post.

There is a lot of decluttering content available out there, so why one more blog? My goal is to be able to provide a view into decluttering and self-care that could reach people that weren’t reached by what they’ve seen out there already.

Sometimes I wonder “how personal should I get, how much detail, what feels safe and will be helpful to others”? Although MoreThanCrumbs currently has a small readership, it still exists out there on the internet. I’ve gotten some positive feedback, dear readers, so thank you!

Being able to positively affect people in my quirky way is why I do it, baby!

Enough about me, though!

Why do you do it? Declutter and self-care? What is carefully considering your possessions like for you? Is it easy, or a struggle? It was a struggle for me, and sometimes still is.

And self-care … whew! Sometimes it comes naturally, other times not. I was under the weather for a few weeks recently, and I knew even a short meditation every day would be helpful but I didn’t do it.

Oops… I’m talking about myself again. I think I recently asked about self-care, but here’s another chance. Do you have something particularly good for your self-care? Or what is the result of taking care of yourself – or conversely, what happens when you don’t do those things?

For years sewing has been a relaxing, creative effort for me: solitary and quiet. I have realized that cooking can feel the same way. Making something tasty and nutritious for those I love makes me calm and happy.

I don’t engage in self care as much as I’d like, I tend to wander more toward the avoidance activities, like hanging out on the internet or watching hulu. In a way those activities help me decompress enough so that I can then go and read, take a walk with my dog, and just breathe. I do these things so that I feel like my body and spirit are on solid ground, so I can be there for my family, and be present for my own creativity when it comes a callin’.

I do avoidance activities too. I didn’t know there was a term for it. It’s like a ladder of self-care: obsessing at worst; avoidance a little better; then good self-care. We do what we can at the moment!
